Get your skates on…
New Christmas traditions are being made in Coventry this year, with the launch of Coventry Glides, an almost two-month-long event that hopes to break the ice (not literally) on coronavirus-safe events.
The ruins of St Michael’s Cathedral in Coventry are to be the location of an outdoor ice-skating rink
from 27 November, open til the New Year, with the exception of Christmas Day.
The launch will be the first chance for the organisers behind UK City of Culture 2021 to exhibit a taste of what we can expect from May 2021 as part of their forthcoming winter programme.
A winter wonderland, like nothing ever before seen in Coventry, is to be created in the historic, open-air ruins.
With the spread of coronavirus being an ever-more present thought on people’s minds, the organisers have worked with event specialists to plan extensive precautionary measures to reduce person-to-person contact, including timed slots, a mandatory facemask policy and frequent deep cleaning.
A spokesperson explained that “safety is our top priority”.
Being costly to arrange and operate, the event will be ticked at a reasonable expense; prices are to be cheaper the earlier they are booked and start from £5, going on sale from Friday 13 November.
Chenine Bhathena, of the Coventry City of Culture Trust, said she encourages people in Coventry to “have some fun this Winter” and hinted at Coventry Glides being just one of “a few” events the Trust have planned before the end of the year.
The Trust hopes the event will continue annually for years to come, becoming “a regular feature of the city’s Christmas offer.”
The event will be made possible thanks to collaborative work with the Cathedral, Business Improvement District and City Council.
Councillor George Duggins, Leader of Coventry City Council, said in a statement that while it continues to be a “tough year for us all”, it is “wonderful to see something fun and exciting” ahead.
Trish Willets, who heads up the Business Improvement District, said: “To be able to offer an ice rink is exciting enough, but having it situated within the beautiful Cathedral Ruins makes it extra special.”
Supersede: The UK City of Culture Trust have confirmed the rescheduling of Coventry Glides due to the imposition of a month-long lockdown in England.
The event will start from Friday, 4 December and run for an extra week in January.
